Why Plasma Treat Wire & Cable Products

Atmospheric plasma treaters are replacing traditional marking methods such as hot stamping and print wheels as an in-line surface treating solution to improve marking adhesion for wire and cable. Thus removing the need for chemical primers and surface roughing processes prior to printing.

Materials with low surface energy, including PE, PVC, PP, PTFE, XLPE, ETFE, FEP, EPDM, Silicone and many others have difficulty bonding with inks. Plasma treatment activates these surfaces to improve wettability and bonding properties. Using a stream of high energy ions produced by compressed air and electricity, followed by ink-jet printing, this process creates indelible printing providing excellent abrasion and smudge resistance.

Manufactures using plasma treatment can switch to ink jet printing which is a non-contact process that supports high-speeds lines and fast changeovers. Changes to wire marking content are handled electronically and can be database driven. Plasma treaters have also enabled manufacturers to replace solvent inks with water based or UV inks, eliminating harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Plasma Treatment Improves Print Durability on Nexans’ Wire

Nexans is the one of the largest wire and cable manufacturers in the world. They needed to improve ink jet print durability on their polyethylene jacketed wire. Read how they found a solution with Plasma surface treatment.

Ink adhesion on High Performance Wire & Cable Jacketing Materials

High performance wire & cable jacketing materials often have low levels of polar functional groups on the surface making them inherently resistance to traditional marking and coding methods. This technical article will explore these challenges and the plasma technology recipes that are enabling ink adhesion.
